Specialty cards are designed to look and feel different from ordinary cards. This can be achieved through special finishes on the card surface, unusual shapes, raised or recessed details, metallic effects, holographic elements, or a combination of several techniques.
These effects do more than make a card look attractive. The right finish can make a logo stand out, create a different tactile experience, or give a simple plastic card a more premium appearance. At the same time, different finishes and shapes have different production requirements, so the design needs to be considered together with the manufacturing process.

Special Finishes for Custom Cards
Hot Stamping
Hot stamping is one of the most common ways to add a metallic effect to a plastic card. Gold, silver, and other metallic foils can be applied to logos, text, borders, or selected graphic elements.
It works particularly well for membership cards, hotel cards, luxury products, and business cards where a small metallic detail can make a significant difference.
Hot stamping does not need to cover the entire card. In many designs, using it selectively gives a cleaner result than applying metallic foil over a large area.
Embossing and Debossing
Embossing raises part of the card surface, while debossing presses the design into the card.
These techniques are useful when the design needs a physical, tactile element rather than just a printed effect. Logos, numbers, patterns, and decorative elements can all be considered for embossing or debossing.
The size and position of the details need to be considered carefully because very small or complicated patterns may not reproduce well.
Frosted and Matte Finishes
A frosted surface creates a softer, less reflective appearance than a standard glossy card. It can also give the card a different feel when held.
Frosted finishes are often used when the design calls for a more understated or modern appearance. They can also be combined with glossy spot areas to create contrast between different parts of the same card.
Spot UV and Gloss Effects
Spot UV adds a high-gloss finish only to selected areas of the card.
For example, the main card can have a matte surface while the logo, pattern, or text is glossy. The effect is relatively subtle, but it can make a printed design much more noticeable without changing the overall color scheme.
Holographic Effects
Holographic finishes can create changing visual effects as the card moves under light. They can be used as a decorative element or incorporated into a security-oriented design.
Holographic effects are available in different patterns and structures, so the final appearance depends on both the material and the artwork.
Metallic and 3D Effects
Metallic inks, special films, and raised printing techniques can also be combined to create a more dimensional appearance.
These techniques are useful when a normal CMYK print cannot provide the visual effect required by the design. They are particularly suitable for premium membership cards, promotional cards, and branded gift cards.
Custom-Shaped Cards
Not every card needs to be a standard rectangle.
A custom-shaped card can be produced with a special die-cut shape, rounded corners, cut-out sections, or other non-standard profiles.
For example, a membership card could follow the outline of a product logo, while a promotional card could be designed around a particular product or campaign theme.
However, custom shapes need to be considered together with the card's intended use. If the card needs to be carried in a standard wallet or inserted into a card reader, an unusual shape may not be practical.
For this reason, custom-shaped cards are often more suitable for promotional cards, gift cards, loyalty cards, event passes, tags, and other applications where the card does not need to follow the standard ISO card format.
Special Finishes Can Be Combined
One of the advantages of custom card production is that different techniques do not necessarily have to be used separately.
A single card can combine a matte or frosted background with hot stamping, spot UV, embossing, and custom printing.
For example, a premium membership card could use a black matte surface, a metallic logo, and a small embossed pattern. The design remains relatively simple, but the combination of different surface effects gives the card a very different appearance from an ordinary printed PVC card.
The key is not to use as many effects as possible. A few well-chosen details usually produce a cleaner result.
Can Specialty Cards Include RFID or NFC?
Yes. Special finishes and custom shapes can also be combined with RFID or NFC technology.
The chip or antenna can be integrated into the card while the visible surface is customized with different printing and finishing techniques.
This makes specialty cards suitable for applications such as:
Membership cards
Loyalty cards
Hotel and hospitality cards
Access cards
Event cards
NFC business cards
Promotional cards
Gift and branded cards
When RFID or NFC is required, however, the position of the antenna and chip needs to be considered during the card design stage. Some materials and finishing processes may also affect the manufacturing process.
Choosing the Right Finish
The best finish depends on what the card is supposed to achieve.
If the main goal is a metallic premium appearance, hot stamping may be appropriate. If the design needs a tactile element, embossing or debossing may be considered. For a subtle visual contrast, matte and spot UV finishes can work well.
For promotional campaigns, a custom shape may have more impact than adding several surface effects.
There is also a practical side to the decision. Card thickness, artwork, production quantity, durability requirements, RFID/NFC integration, and the way the finished card will be used should all be considered before production.
